Essential interview tips

  1. The Three Whys

You will need to answer the three whys directly or indirectly in every interview.

Q. Why leave your current firm?

A. Be careful here. Answers should be short and very matter of fact. Do not be tempted to list negatives of your current firm. Move swiftly onto what the interviewer’s team offers.

Q. Why join this team?

A. This is your chance to show off your research into the interviewers and team.

Your consultant should have matched you well so you can express your genuine wants and goals from the move. This could be work-type, team structure, client base, progression, support, reward, BD opportunities, or any combination of these.

Q. Why should we hire you?

A. Showing that you understand what the team does and what the team needs is important. By asking questions about the firm/team’s recent deals or cases you can demonstrate an understanding of the technical aspects of work.

Also show an understanding of how the business might operate. Think about the client base and how they are instructed/win work, think about the team structure - what do they need right now?

2. Active listening

Take the advice of Stoic philosopher Epictetus and listen twice as much as you speak.

The interview should be a two-way process and it is a good chance to understand what the firm is offering. If you must demonstrate your knowledge and experience do so by turning it into questions about the interviewers/firm and listen to the answer - you will come away with a much better idea of what they have to offer and the firm will know you are genuinely interested.

3. Be prepared

Know your CV inside out.

Be prepared to explain your career history and any moves.

Research the role and firm.

Know where the interview is taking place and arrive in good time.

4. Be keen and confident

Enthusiasm and engagement play an important role in first impressions.
